The khussa evolved from a humble peasant shoe into a royal luxury during the Mughal Empire, popularized by Emperor Jahangir as the jewel-encrusted "Saleem Shahi" shoe. Zari work, derived from the Persian word for gold (zar), originally used real gold and silver threads stitched onto velvet and leather for the royal courts. Today, this centuries-old craft survives through skilled artisans who use affordable metallic threads to blend historical royal opulence with everyday footwear.
